Pastoral Counseling: What is it? Why the bible? Why not read self-help books? The Bible tells us why in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 ~ (NIV): All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (TLB) The whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us do what is right. 17 It is God’s way of making us well prepared at every point, fully equipped to do good to everyone. (MSG) Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God's way. 17 Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us. (GW) Every Scripture passage is inspired by God. All of them are useful for teaching, pointing out errors, correcting people, and training them for a life that has God's approval. 17 They equip God's servants so that they are completely prepared to do good things. Through the Holy Spirit, when we read our Bible God leads our thoughts in the right direction and we begin to break strongholds through the power of his word. But, we must be willing to examine our behavior and attitudes in light of scripture The Word of God must go through our head and heart if it’s going to change our life.
