"My Heart Goes Out"

"A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more." -- Matthew 2:18 (NIV)

Abortion ~

There are many women that in the midst of their eating disorder found it necessary to have an abortion. I was one of those women. Others have had an abortion, and an eating disorder was triggered from the event. Many of us who have had an abortion, repress feelings of guilt, shame, anger and grief because we feel we have bigger monsters to slay. An abortion is a big monster, whether you have dealt with it yet or not.

It wasn't until I participated in a post-abortion Bible study group for women (they do have them for men) that I saw just how deep those feelings were hidden. I found many reasons to justify my actions.

The truth is I was just plain selfish. I was more concerned about my body and what other people would think of me, than for a human life. I had my abortion in my eighth-week. 'They' told me it was a blob of tissue, only an inch long. They were right - it was an inch long, but I learned that this developing life was already termed a fetus (Latin for young one or offspring).

Everything was present in that fetus that was found in a fully developed adult. The heart had been beating for more than a month, the stomach was producing digestive juices, and the kidneys had begun to function. Forty muscle sets had begun to operate in conjunction with the nervous system. And the fetus body responded to the touch from the physician before he was aborted.

Psalm 139 tells us that this little fetus was predestined by God. God had a plan for my little baby. This little person had a defined purpose in life. I'm not going to keep going on because it's painful. But I am comforted to know my Father has forgiven me, I have forgiven myself, and I will one day be reunited with my child in heaven. God showed me He was taking good care of my child.

Yes, I learned a great deal about myself as I healed from bulimia, but found it necessary, and advantageous to explore and heal from the effects of my abortion. I encourage every one of you that has had an abortion to take the HEART post-abortion Bible study, or a church related study. And it's fun! You will meet and bond with some exceptional women (or men).
